How Buy a Mattress Without Breaking the Bank

Sleep is extremely important to our well-being, in more ways than one. A great night’s sleep helps prepare our brains to be its best when we are awake. Your body repairs any daily stress to your internal organs and cardiovascular system, your hormones rebalance, and you are more alert to take on your day. This is just a sample of the health benefits we acquire when we sleep well.

What if you aren’t sleeping well

Tossing and turning throughout the night is not only disruptive of the necessary rest we need to take on the next day, it is literally unhealthy, and the results could become worse over time, and end up costing you money. There are a myriad of reasons why a person might not be getting enough sleep. They could be suffering from insomnia, or experiencing body pain, which could be caused by many things including an out of date mattress.

Every problem has a solution

If you aren’t getting the sleep you need and have seen medical professionals that ruled out any serious problems, maybe it is time to take a look at your mattress.

Still, mattresses are expensive so it isn’t a purchase that should be made in haste. We are so over uneducated purchases so we put together a few tips on what to look for when buying a new mattress because

Know your options

There are a great deal of mattress types and companies on the market. The price alone could range all the way from a under $100 to well over a $1,000. Do your research. There are a number of reviews on the internet like this one that lists the best mattresses for hip pain, which could be the reason why you are interested in buying a new mattress.

No matter what type of options you are looking for, know what they are and decide what fits best for you without spending more than your budget.

Is there sufficient support?

Do you prefer your mattress to be firm or soft? Would you rather the mattress bounce a little when you lay on it or do you like a mattress that stays put? Or would you like a mixture of the two?

While coil mattresses tend to bounce more, memory foam mattresses are not as springy. If you aren’t sure of what you like and want to compare, go to a local mattress or department store and start feeling them out. Don’t worry about sales people wanting you to pin down a purchase right there. A mattress is a very large purchase and you should never rush into the decision.

Do you have allergies?

If you find that you are sneezing and wheezing throughout the night then it is possible you are allergic to the dust mites that live in all of our mattresses. Of course, with a new mattress, there will be no mites yet, but after a year this won’t be the case.

Spring mattresses are the least resistant to mite overload while latex is the opposite. All this goes back to knowing what you want. If allergies are a priority for you, whether your selection is hypoallergenic should be put at the top of your list.

Don’t be too frugal

Once you know which style of mattress would make you the happiest, then you can go back to the internet and refine your search. Say you like traditional coil mattresses. Your next step is to find out what others think about the coil mattresses on the market. What manufacturer has the best reputation? All the while you are checking the prices.

The truth is, skimping too much on a mattress purchase will cause you more money in the long run. The doctor’s bills and remedies for sleep ailments like back pain or sleep apnea will stack up if you choose an insufficient mattress to save money.

How to dispose of your old mattress

When you are done purchasing a new bed you need to consider what to do with the one you are replacing, unless you are moving into a new space and buying a bed for the first time. There are several options on how to do this responsibly.

You can ask the delivery guys to take it for you when they drop off your new one, or you can get back on the computer and find a recycling service in your area. Mattresses are recyclable but must be disposed of properly.

Whatever mattress you choose, there is no way you can research the subject too much.

  1. We recently purchased a new mattress from Naturepedic and really like it. While pricier than its competitors – the benefits outweigh the costs. This bed is very comfortable, organic (latex free, etc) and has some good warranties.
