Yep this is a personal post for little ole me. As I first explained in the “getting to know me” post, you will have some of the generic posts on how to save money and investing for the future, some guest posts from single moms trying to make it, and then whatever space is left over is dedicated to my nonsensical ranting. Well, said ranting is about to begin!
My wife and I just went through the process of moving, twice in fact within a 4 month span. We hired the same movers both times, and thought we had received good service the first time around. The first time the movers had taken our furniture and belongings to storage and we simply left the shinkwrap on everything and didn’t do any visual inspections until we received the furniture at our new place. That’s when I realized that what I fear will ALWAYS happen whenever I hire out..happened…yep, they botched the job and totally wrecked our stuff. Every single piece of furniture we own has a knick, dent, scratch, or chunk missing out of it. I promptly called the owner, and what do you think happened? Oh yea, he denied it could have been their company. His response, “we wrapped it up in shrinkwrap, it doesn’t make any sense how it could have been damaged.” OH NO…HOW COULD A 200LB. DRESSER POSSIBLY GET DAMAGED IN A MOVING TRUCK GOING 50 MPH WHEN IT HAS A SUIT OF ARMOR ON IT LIKE SHRINKWRAP?!?!?!!? Perhaps they were in the process of playing mobile bingo as they drove! One word for this guy, “dishonest”. I could have simply called him an idiot, but that would be an excusable reason for his answer, that he simply doesn’t know any better. Nope, this guy fields complaint calls all the time, I know this because he is clearly lying about the fault of the damage. I know with a fact that nobody except for his movers have touched that furniture in several months…and certainly not to the extent of wrecking every single piece I own. Even my outdoor patio table had a chunk of metal broken off the bottom of it, I don’t even know how they could accomplish that feat unless they were actually trying to break it for fun. I know I certainly didn’t pay this company to destroy my stuff, what I did pay them for was to move everything I had in storage, and move it safely. The key words I wanted you to take away from that last sentence was “move everything”. I say that because these yo-yo’s actually left stuff behind that I had to then go back and pick up myself.
So the guy, presumably tired of my b*tching, reluctantly agrees to make his way out my house to inspect the damage. I will give him credit for this one, because it only took him a couple days to make it out, though the day he called it was last minute and he was two hours late. Yeah he didn’t acknowledge, let alone apologize, that he was two hours late and I was late meeting someone in turn. He walks through my house inspecting the several damaged pieces of furniture, mumbles about how he knows that his company couldn’t have caused this damage, but is still willing to have someone fix it. He also notes some areas of the furniture that can’t be fixed, I suppose I am to live with that. But he does reassure that he has a furniture expert that works for them and can come out and take care of it all right away, and that expert actually used to work at the very same place I purchased the furniture…can’t beat that.
Several days pass by and I hear nothing from the guy, no updates, not that I expected much. Finally he calls me and offers up a day on the weekend that we are having family over, I tell him any other day or night would be perfect though and that I WOULD accomodate him if at all possible. He discusses more possible days, a couple I bite on and tell him would work, he then changes tune and says he needs to check his schedule again. Yep, HIS schedule, because he is now coming out to fix it, not the furniture expert I was promised. Those days I tentatively agree to, well he never calls back to confirm or deny those dates, just doesn’t contact me at all. So I email him asking for someone to come out as soon as possible to fix the damage they caused, and he simply tells me he has tried “four times already”. I can tell you that never happened. This is just more crappy customer service that I have become accustomed to receiving from companies. It bothers me so much because I feel as a consumer we never have enough recourse against these people screwing us over, it seems like they always come out on top. This is another reason I bought this blog to begin with, I have an audience to rant to, and maybe even provide me with a few suggestions as well.
Anyways, you might (or might not) be wondering the course of action I decided to take. I’m tired of dealing with people that LIE, CHEAT, STEAL, or provide me poor customer service!!! So I simply declinded the credit card charge, now this is only a fraction of the cost of what his people destroyed, but it’s a start! AMEX will make sure they take care of their customer, and will deal with this gentleman for me, so that I don’t have to keep stressing out over calling and emailing someone who is most likely trying to dodge me anyways. Now his money is taken away until he proves he is in the right, which I assure you he is not. This is only my first step in righting this guys wrongs, my next step is to file a small claims suit. A small claims suit in Michigan can be filed for pennies, and covers up to $3,000 in damages and liabilities. Best of all, a small claims suit frees me of an further legal fees like a laywer. I actually filed quite a few of these back in the day with a company I used to work for, and I found the method to be quite effective in collecting on past dues that people owed us, so I’m happy to give it a shot with my current situation. I hope to win, but even if I lose, I will feel vindicated in that this guy needs to take time out of his life to fight this battle, as I’ve had to do myself.
I’ll keep all of your post on further updates with this situation, I’m sure it will progress fairly quickly now. I almost thought about throwing up a link to the movers website…what do you think? Will I get sued? Should I just go for it? For another not so interesting read on how I was wronged, check out my honeymoon debacle and the travel agent from hell on my other site. Oh and it’s a two parter, so for the resolution see this post on how I handled the situation :)
All I can say is, THANK GOD I MOVED THE TV’S MYSELF!
