Personal Injuries: What to Do When You’ve Been Injured

Accidents happen when you least expect it. You’re driving home from a hard day of work and a driver not paying attention rear-ends you causing a six-car pile-up. Or you’re in a store and slip and fall because the store owner neglected to clean up the mess on aisle two. Perhaps you’re home jamming to some tunes and accidentally cut yourself with the knife. Or you’re lifting a box at work and suddenly your back gives out. Whatever the case was, you’re not injured and haven’t the slightest idea of what to do next. Here’s some advice.

The first step, of course, would be to take care of your injuries. Whether you’ve got an open wound from the knife slicing your finger, a bad back because of a heavy box at work, or neck and back problems from the pile-up on the highway you need to make sure that you’re seen by a medical professional. Going to a doctor or emergency room provides documentation of your injuries which may be necessary for insurance, work, or legal reasons.

Hire an Attorney

Are your injuries the fault of someone else’s negligence? Was that car accident or slip and fall a result of something that someone else did or didn’t do? If so, you may need to hire a personal injury attorney. In doing so, you could seek compensation for things like pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost wages, medical expenses, and damages to property if necessary. A personal injury attorney can’t help with healing your wounds but they can certainly make sure that you don’t have to worry about your finances as you try to recover.

Obtain Disability Insurance

If the injuries you sustained were severe enough that you’ll be out of work or unable to perform work tasks you will need to apply for disability insurance to provide a form of income protection. If qualified, you will receive a portion of your income while you’re out on disability. Depending on the policy you have, you could be looking at at least 60-75% of your regular work pay.

Continue Treatments

Depending on the extent of your injuries you may be required to seek physical therapy and other continued treatments to properly heal. It is imperative to your overall health that you continue to keep your appointments. This is not only necessary for healing but may be required to continue receiving disability and could prove valuable to your case.

Relax Often

Injuries are stressful. You’re now unable to do things that were once easy to complete. Not only are you permanently or temporarily disabled, you’re also missing out on money and life in general. This can all become very stressful to deal with. However, a poor mental state will only result in poor physical health. The best thing you can do for your mind and body is to relax as often as you can.

Find New Purpose

For those who are dealing with significant injuries that permanently prevent them from being able to return to their careers, finding a new purpose is beneficial to healing. Though you may not be able to return to your old job again, there are other things out there you can try that will give you purpose and meaning. Take up a hobby, start a side business, or help others with similar disabilities. The more you focus on your purpose the easier it is to get past your injuries.

Being injured is no fun. It can disrupt a person’s entire life. Healing is about more than going to the doctor and receiving a pill or a band-aid. It requires a plethora of steps to safeguard your mind and body. As you follow each of these steps, you’ll feel the burden lifted from your shoulders as you strive to find a new normal with your injuries.
