Disclosure: I am in no way affiliated with Google. I just heart them (it?) so very much for all of my online needs.
If you follow me on Twitter (and if you don’t, you should!), you’ve probably read the tweets where I’m cracking up and/or ranting about some of the ways people find my site. I swear, the ability to see the search terms that lead people here is the single best part of blogging. (Yes, I know I’m a nerd.) Every now and then, I like to respond to some of the search queries – does anyone else read that in the voice of The Ladies Man? – since my posts don’t always match up with what people are looking for.
So here are some of my favorite searches from the past month or so, along with my responses.
i want to stop worrying about money – Me too, dude. If you figure that one out, please let me know. I’m assuming you’re having some specific money troubles, though, so here’s my advice: Spend less than you earn (or earn more if you can’t cut your spending). Make a real effort to find out where your money goes. Decide what you can afford. Automate your finances as much as you can. Easy right? That was a trick question, because HELL NO it’s not easy! But it’s possible. And while your problems won’t magically disappear, my finances are proof that it can be done.
how to tell boyfriend you filed bankruptcy – *ahem* “[boyfriend’s name], just so you know, I filed bankruptcy.” You’re welcome!
discover how to avoid a paycheck life “debt” – Okay, I’m having a bit of difficulty decoding this one. I’m not quite sure what a “paycheck life” is, but it doesn’t sound very fun. Are we avoiding living paycheck to paycheck? Because I’m all about that. But if we’re talking avoiding paychecks, I can’t see the logic – I kind of like getting paid.
personal finance “guest post policy” – It astounds me that so many people find So Over Debt through this search, yet none of the emails I get seem to come from people who have actually read my guest post policy. Some of you need to work on your reading comprehension skills.
hate cleaning up after my husband – Me too, girl! That’s why I’m glad I don’t have one anymore.
thinking different personal finance – I’d like to think that’s what I’m doing here. Not that I’m smarter than all the money experts, because I’m totally not, but their advice (while useful) never really did anything to prompt me to take action. It took finding my own methods (like the Single Mom Budget) to actually do anything about my finances – I had to find something that worked for ME.
can i buy a ipad 2 at rent a center – OMG, seriously? I don’t know the answer to this question – my guess is no – but if you want to make payments adding up to double the price of an iPad, I’ll sell you mine. You just pay me $40 a month for 24 months and it’s all yours! I reserve the right to confiscate said iPad if you don’t pay on time.
don’t try to shut my mouth – I have no idea what this has to do with ANYTHING but I absolutely adore whoever typed this into Google and ended up here. Is this karma’s way of saying my posts are too long?
am i being irresponsible for buy something when in debt – Yes, you are. And so am I, and so is everyone else who buys stuff other than necessities when they’re in debt. But part of life is enjoying yourself at least sometimes, and no one can focus only on debt constantly. So I say, as long as you’re not taking on new debt to buy something, reward yourself every now and then. (I’m talking a $10 book or something, not a new car!)
hoe to stop overspending – I laughed at this one for about an hour. I know the person meant “how” but I couldn’t help thinking of it as a news headline: “Hoe to Stop Overspending.” Gotta keep an eye on those garden tools and their credit cards.
how to finish off a victoria’s secret card – With dessert? With rope, a sharp knife, and an alibi? I can’t figure this one out to save my life.
my coworker is an idiot – I had one of those not too long ago. Actually, I found out over the weekend that she is now pregnant on top of being an idiot with a ton of debt. It makes my brain hurt. I want to be happy for her but I know she’s going to double their credit card debt buying baby crap. Even though everyone in her family has given birth recently and she could get a lot of things for free.
i hate my cleaning lady – My heart is bleeding. This site was made just for you.
should i have a sofa in my bedroom – Yes! As long as you have room and can afford it. I’ll have one in my room someday.
wtf my sister uses my cup to clean the toilet – I’m pretty sure you should get a new cup. Or a new sister. Because that’s wrong in so many ways and I can’t figure out why that search would bring you here.
